Arts & Culture Powerhouse

This summer, the Ladysmith Arts Council received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Strategy Fund (DSF) to organize two events for Island/coastal artists.

The first event, a webcast on July 25, 2019, asked the question: can our Vancouver Island/coastal area be Canada's arts and culture powerhouse? There were 56 participants, representing a wide variety of organizations, including Indigenous and non-Indigenous tourism and economic development associations, arts councils, government agencies (local, regional, provincial, federal) and artists. The response from attendees was extremely positive. Participants showed a great deal of readiness for conversations about deepening collaboration for mutual benefit. See our summary report that also outlines next steps under publications in the menu. On August 15, we held a follow up meeting to discuss who from the initial group wants to work with us to obtain Phase 2 DSF funding. The second event, a webcast on August 8, 2019, offered Island/Coastal artists some tips and tools to engage more effectively in the digital world. There were 700 registrants, and about half attended the online workshop. The first half of the evening featured Terry O’Reilly from Under the Influence on CBC. Terry spoke about the power of storytelling in marketing artists and their art, and was only available as a live- event - we were not able to make a recording of the talk in order to comply with Terry’s contract. You can read a summary of his talk here. Thanks to artist Stephen Cole for taking these great notes(hereafter known as “Cole’s Notes”!) The second half of the event featured Inga Petrie talking about how to show up better in Google’s search engine, and Mike Hallatt talking about the artfinds.me app. Here is Inga’s presentation.

We’re also produced a few short instructional videos: how to digitize art, understanding copyright issues in the digital age and the do’s and don’ts of cultural appropriation. These videos are posted below.
