For creative artists of all sorts, water opens the door for many areas of exploration including reflections, still water, running water, shorelines, landscapes, and countless other options. During this three day workshop, watercolour artist Harold Allanson will supply each students with photo images to work from. With everyone working from the same photo, he'll guide the class in creating a composition of their own, with water being the central subject, and special focus will be on the important use of value changes and colour. Students are also encouraged to bring their own water-related photos for individual feedback (only photos you’ve taken yourself please). Each day there’ll be lots of group discussion on problem solving as well as daily demos by Harold as we study water in its many forms. Harold likes his workshops to be relaxed and fun for everyone with minimal pressure so that you, the artist, can learn something new at your own pace. Please join us!

Recommended Materials List (You May Work in Oil or Acrylic, as Per Your Preference):

• 1 full sheet of Arches watercolour paper or your brand choice (block watercolour paper is fine as well, providing it's approximately 15x10 ")
• sturdy backing board to mount you paper onto
• Masking tape
• Fresh! masking fluid (not sticky or dried up). Harold recommends Pebeo brand
• Roll of toilet paper
• Roll of paper towel
• Box cutter or scissors
• 12-inch ruler (metal preferred)
• Mechanical pencil
• Fine black ball point pen (not nylon tips or soft point pen tips). Must have a real little steel ball on the tip, recommend Pentel R.S.V.P. fine
• Water container
• Eraser
• Hair dryer (optional: we just need a few amongst the group to share)
• Ruling pen (adjustable point for applying masking fluid or paint). Harold can lend to those who are unsure/don't have
• Your choice of watercolour paints and brushes (not student grade) —  Harold uses Daniel Smith watercolour paints. Winsor & Newton is also good. Just bring all the paints you have, if you’re happy with them, they’ll be just fine. You'll need a dark and light of yellow, red, and blue
• The colours Harold has on his palette are: DS Quinacridone Burnt Orange, DS Quinacridone Gold, DS Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet, DS Cadmium Red, DS Permanent Alizarin, DS Cobalt  Blue, DS French Ultramarine Blue, DS Cadmium Orange, DS Olive Green, DS Viridian, DS Rich Green gold, DS Yellow Ochre, DS Aureolin, DS New Gamboge, DS Raw Umber, DS Lunar Black, DS Paynes Gray

About Your Instructor:

Since retiring from the trucking industry twenty-five years ago, Harold Allanson focused on becoming an artist. His paintings for the most part reflect

on his past life experiences and the people he worked with or spent time with.

Harold’s work has been shown in exhibitions internationally where he has won many awards. His work can be found in collections throughout Canada, U.S., Spain, Portugal, and Australia. Now, as he starts into his eighties, Harold chooses to continue painting and, in return, passing his knowledge on to others through workshops and demos.
