What to Expect:

  • Obtain a solid foundation in oil painting, setting you up for continued growth and experimentation in your artistic journey.

  • Engage in experimentation-based learning through exploration of different styles and approaches to find your personal preferences.

  • Receive personalized feedback to help improve your technique and develop your own style.

Classes Will Cover:

  • Understanding different types (student vs. artist grade) and their characteristics.Types of Oil Paints:

  • Introduction to mediums and solvents used in oil painting.Mediums and Solvents:

  • Overview of various brushes, palette knives, and other essential tools.Brushes and Tools:

  • Different supports like canvas and wood panels, and how to prepare them.Painting Surfaces:

  • Learning how to mix colors to create a wide range of hues and tones.Color Mixing:

  • Techniques for different brushstrokes, including blending, scumbling, and glazing.Brushwork:

  • Proper handling of oil paints, solvents, and safe cleaning practices.Studio Safety and Cleanup:

  • How to care for your artwork and manage drying times.Drying and Storage:

Course Materials List:

Substrates

  • Mixed media sketchbook

  • 1-2 painting supports (your choice of canvas or wood panel, minimum size 16 x 20 inches, prepared and ready for paint)

Easel

  • free-standing easel or tabletop easel (your preference)

Brushes

  • A range of your favorite brushes, including #6 and #14 flat brushes

Basics

  • Pencil, eraser, and sharpener

  • Fine-tip Sharpie

  • Ruler

  • Masking tape

  • Shop towel or paper towel

  • Jar for mineral spirits

  • Jar for medium

  • Palette

  • Palette knife

Paint:

  • Titanium White

  • Burnt Umber

  • Black

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt

  • Napthol Red or Cadmium Red

  • Hansa Yellow or Cadmium Yellow

  • Alizarin Crimson

  • Ultramarine Violet

  • Phthalo Green

  • Payne’s Grey

  • Sap Green

Medium and Mineral Spirits:

  • Stand oil or Galkyd Gel (tube)

  • Gamsol or similar odorless mineral spirits
